Former chaplain for Manchester Memorial Hospital / Laurel Creek Nursing Home passes away

Mr. Richard Eugene Smith, 78 of Manchester passed away on Monday, March 9, 2015 at the University of Kentucky Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

He was born on September 10, 1936 in St. Thomas, Pennsylvania to the union of Glenn and Mary Belle Morris Smith. He was a retired minister and served in the Army National Guard.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith came to Kentucky forty years ago as missionaries serving at Gospel Mission for one year and at Kentucky Mountain Mission for twenty four years. He also served as pastor of Jacks Branch Bible Church for thirty five years, worked at Youth Haven Bible Camp for twenty four years, served as chaplain at Manchester Memorial Hospital for eighteen years and also at Laurel Creek Nursing Home for several years. He was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and a Sunday School teacher there for four years.

Mr. Smith is survived by his wife Gloria and the following children; Rick Smith and wife Karen, Mark Smith and wife Amy, Kimberly Roberts and husband Dennie, all of Manchester and these siblings: Glenn Smith II, Joanne Grove and Shirley Coy, all of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

He is also survived by four grandchildren; Jason Roberts and wife Meloney, Kara Smith, Clint Smith, Patience Smith and four great-grandchildren; Kinsey Smith, Leah Roberts, Bryson Roberts and Aden Runion.

He is preceded in death by his parents Glenn and Mary Belle Smith and his sister Jane Black.

Funeral services for Richard Eugene Smith will be held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 2:00 PM at the Britton Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charlie Goodman and Rev. Bill Holeman officiating. Burial will follow in the Manchester Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be held on Friday evening at 6:00 PM at the Britton Funeral Home Chapel.
