Fleeing Suspect in Southeast Kentucky Found Covered with Mud, Sweating Heavily in Bedroom Pretending to be Asleep

LONDON, KY - (ClayCoNews) - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's K-9 Deputy Brian France arrested a male subject early Monday morning November 28, 2022 at approximately 12:55 AM.

The arrest occurred at a residence off Old Way, Road, approximately 6 miles east of London after Deputy France attempted to contact the driver of a gray Ford Escape after observing suspicious activity involving the vehicle at a business off Highway 80 just east of London.

As Deputy France approached the vehicle, the driver rolled his window up and sped away failing to stop for Deputy France.

The vehicle traveled onto Sally's Branch Road then onto Old Way, Road turning onto a dirt path off Old Way, Road and traveled into the woods failing to stop. The suspect got his vehicle stuck and fled on foot to a nearby residence.

Deputy France ran registration information off the suspect vehicle and determined that it was the residence he was seen running toward.

When Deputy France made contact with the owner of the residence there, permission was granted and deputies entered the residence and found the male suspect in a bedroom pretending to be asleep covered in mud and sweating heavily.

The driver, identified as Zachary Ryan Cotton stated the reason he ran was because he knew he had outstanding warrants and didn't want to go to jail.

Zachary Cotton was charged with:

Fleeing or evading police – second-degree – motor vehicle; fleeing or evading police – second-degree – on foot; driving on a DUI suspended license – first offense.

In addition, the subject was charged on a Laurel Circuit Court indictment warrant of arrest charging burglary – third-degree.

Also, the subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging failure to appear in court on charges of operating a motor vehicle under the influence – second offense.

In addition, the subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging failure to appear in court on charges of public intoxication – controlled substances; possession of drug paraphernalia.

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Assisting Deputy France for the Laurel County Sheriff's office were: Interdiction unit Landry Collett, Interdiction unit Justin Taylor, and Deputy Skylar McFarland. Also assisting was London City Police and the Constable's Office.
