Doctor James D. Dawson Jr.

Obituary for James D. Dawson Jr.

Doctor James D. Dawson Jr., 76, beloved Husband, Dad, and Son, was called to his eternal resting place on February 26, 2024. He entered this world on March 16, 1947, in Shepherdsville, KY, born to Delmar and Lillian Dawson.

He is survived by his wife Sheila Dawson and his children Neal, Carrie, Paige and Zach Dawson, stepchildren Ashley and Luke Baker, Kendra and Kuda Mandebvu, Savannah and Brett Reynolds and six precious grandchildren Peter, Judah, Ellie, John, Isla and Theo and a host of friends and patients who he loved like family!

Jim was a OBGYN who delivered 10,000 babies in Kentucky 7,000 while he worked at BRMC in Corbin, Kentucky! He would tell everyone he couldn't have done it without Jenny Hungerbuhler and his office staff including Tiny Roark and Kim Young and too many to mention!  He truly loved his professional life and the friends he acquired in his years as a Doctor. He attended medical school at UK in Lexington Ky and devoted his life to caring for women in Southeastern Kentucky

Jim maintained a close friendship with his elementary, high school and college friends as well as the many he met in his antique world. He especially loved his friends Norma and Larry Curl. His Barber/ friend Royce Rogers was his emergency contact for years!

Sheila and Jim had known each other for 30 years through work prior to finding each other again and for a short 7 years and 3 months they had a love that neither knew was possible! They cared for each other as the most precious gift they received from God.

After retirement they moved to Independence Kansas to be near the grandchildren. They used Kansas as home base as they traveled the world making up for all the many years work interfered with  travel dreams! When Jim saw the Grand Canyon he said, “This view is worth the whole trip!"

Just two short weeks prior to his death he got to see New Mexico, Utah, and Colorado for first time. While in Dodge city at gift shop Sheila ask Jim the usual question, " did you find anything you can't live without?" he replied," only you!"! This one line describes their love for each other! They took care of each other until he walked through the door to Heaven in his recliner after his favorite breakfast and afternoon nap, two of his favorite things!

We will celebrate Jim's life at his church The Gathering Place in Fredonia Kansas on March 10th at Noon. All friends are welcome!

We will also be having a celebration of life at Pearl Apparel on Short Street in London Kentucky on March 17 th from 2-5pm where people can come in and visit and share pictures and funny stories about Jim!

In Lieu of flowers Sheila requests a donation being made to Hometown Hospice, your local pregnancy help center or support a nurse or medical student of your choice. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory.
