(FRANKFORT, Ky.) – Preliminary statistics* indicate that six people died in six separate crashes on Kentucky's roadways during the official Memorial Day holiday period, which began at 6:00 p.m. on Friday, May 24 and ended at 11:59 p.m. on Monday, May 27.
Four single-fatality crashes involved motor vehicles and none of the victims were wearing seat belts. These crashes occurred in Campbell, Grant, Jackson and Whitely counties.
Two single-fatality crashes involved motorcycles. Crashes occurred in Ohio and Pike counties. None of the victims were wearing helmets.
Through May 26, preliminary statistics* indicate that 214 people have lost their lives on Kentucky roadways during 2013. This is 78 less than reported for this time period in 2012. Of the 176 motor vehicle fatalities, 85 victims were not wearing seat belts. Eleven of the 20 motorcycle fatalities were not wearing helmets. The one ATV fatality was not wearing a helmet. One bicycle rider has been killed. Fifteen pedestrians have been killed. One fatality involving an animal drawn vehicle has been reported. A total of 42 fatalities have resulted from crashes involving the suspected use of alcohol. As of May 26, Kentucky has had 37 days with zero highway fatalities reported during 2013.
Citizens can contribute to highway safety by reporting erratic drivers to the Kentucky State Police toll-free at 1-800-222-5555. Callers will remain anonymous and should give a description of the vehicle, location, direction of travel and license number if possible.
*These statistics are still preliminary as KSP waits for all local law enforcement agencies throughout the state to report any crashes and fatalities that may have occurred in their areas.
