McMaine joins team as APRN with advanced training as diabetes educator
WINCHESTER, KY – Jessica McMaine, APRN, has joined CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group – Primary Care in Winchester. Originally from Richmond, McMaine earned her associate and bachelor's degrees at Eastern Kentucky University and graduated with her Master of Science in Nursing in May. As a certified diabetes educator, McMaine is looking forward to continuing specialized patient care in her home state and says she was inspired to work in health care after her own personal diabetes battle.
“I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at age 11, and I knew at that point that when I grew up, I wanted to be a nurse,” said McMaine. “I knew I could positively impact patients' lives throughout their continuum of care, just like how my health care providers influenced my life.”
McMaine will focus on primary care in Winchester, but this isn't the first time she's worked at the facility. McMaine completed her final clinical rotation for her master’s degree with CHI Saint Joseph Medical Group and will reunite with some of her patients in this new role.
“When I was completing my rotation, everyone was incredibly supportive," said McMaine. "It's a robust and busy place of care with practitioners that love their patients. I'm looking forward to returning.”
McMaine received her bachelor's degree in 2012 and has practiced as a medical/surgical nurse at Saint Joseph Hospital and the University of Kentucky HealthCare in Lexington before beginning her dual role in 2015 as a registered nurse and certified diabetes educator within pediatric endocrinology at UK. Since 2019, McMaine has worked at Baptist Health Richmond as a medical/surgical/telemetry nurse. She’s looking forward to now helping those in the Winchester area.
“My nursing philosophy is to treat patients holistically and look at them as a whole and individual person, and I also really enjoy preventive medicine,” said McMaine. "It never hurts to bring some compassion, too; that's one of the biggest things I hope to bring to my new role. I believe God called me to the field of nursing to provide love and compassion to all patients.”
McMaine's honors and licensures include:
- Member of Theta Nu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma)
- Member of Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society
- Daisy Award Nomination (Baptist Health Richmond)
- Member of the American Association of Diabetes Educators
- Member of Kentucky Association of Diabetes Educators
- Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) certified (UK HealthCare)
- Daisy Award Nomination (Saint Joseph Hospital)
- Certified Diabetes Educator (National Certification Board for Diabetes Educators)
- Registered Nurse (Kentucky Board of Nursing)
- Basic Life Support (BSL)
In addition to primary care, preventive care, and diabetes education, McMaine is also interested in mental health care and looks forward to meeting and helping new patients. McMaine enjoys spending time in nature and hanging out with her family and kids, as well as her church small group when she's not working. She and her husband Dylan have two children, Luke and Abigail.
