LONDON, KY — Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Robert Reed has received information from some area businesses and individuals that some counterfeit money is showing up in our area in $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 dollar denominations. The most popular appears to be the counterfeited $20 bills.
There also is movie prop money that resembles legal money that citizens should be aware of. The movie prop bills have “For Motion picture use” imprinted on them.
Citizens and businesses are urged to examine cash they receive to make sure it is actually legal money.
Things to look for include:
- Counterfeit paper is thinner with a different texture
- Counterfeit bills do not have the blue and red threads intertwined in the paper
- Many counterfeit bills are actually movie money bills that have text saying either motion picture use or purpose where United States of America normally is, and on the back says "In Prop We Trust" instead of In God We Trust.
- Counterfeit $20, $50, and $100 bills do not have the security strip embedded in the paper
The pictured $50.00 is a counterfeit bill intercepted last November in a deposit from a local business by an alert teller at a bank in Manchester, KY.
