KNOXVILLE, TN - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is reporting that at the request of 6th Judicial District Attorney General Charme Allen, TBI agents are investigating the circumstances leading to an officer-involved shooting that occurred Wednesday afternoon in Knoxville.
Just after 5:00 p.m., officers with the Knoxville Police Department responded to a report of a male subject acting erratically and causing a disturbance at a business in the 5300 block of N. Broadway.
Preliminary information indicates that upon the arrival of the first officer, the man came out of the store armed with at least one knife and confronted the officer. The officer fired shots, striking the man. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured during the incident.
UPDATED: Thursday, April 18, 2024 at 2:28 p.m. ET – The deceased individual has been identified as William Charles McBride Jr. (DOB: 12/11/82).
TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for her further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.
The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit.
