INMATE DEATH AT DETENTION CENTER IN MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OREGON

MULTNOMAH COUNTY, OR - On Friday, June 16, 2023 at around 8 a.m., an adult in custody (AIC) was found unresponsive in their cell at the Multnomah County Detention Center (MCDC).

Despite lifesaving efforts by corrections deputies and jail medical staff, the adult was pronounced deceased.

As standard protocol, the Multnomah County Sheriff’s Office Detectives Unit responded and is performing a death investigation in conjunction with the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the cause of death at a later date.

As is common practice during a critical incident such as this, the jail was placed in a lockdown to initiate the death investigation and to accommodate staffing movements. At approximately 10:30 a.m., jail restrictions eased to allow essential activities, such as the booking of new individuals, transportation to and from court and releases of individuals. Jail operations are expected to be restored Saturday.

The death investigation remains open, and no further comment will be made at this time. We do not expect to release any additional information until next week.
