TROUSDALE COUNTY, TN - The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is reporting that an investigation by special agents with the TBI has resulted in the indictment of a Hartsville, TN man on a murder charge in the death of a toddler.
James Curtis Yates (21)
On February 21st, at the request of 15th Judicial District Attorney General Jason Lawson, TBI special agents began an investigation after a man made a 911 call indicating his girlfriend’s two-year-old son was not breathing.
The child, Dani-e Coty Mills (2), was transported to a Nashville hospital with injuries, and died two days later. During the course of the investigation, agents determined that the child was in the sole care of James Yates, the mother’s then-boyfriend, at the time the injury was sustained.
On October 17th, the Trousdale County Grand Jury returned indictments charging James Curtis Yates (DOB 01/03/2001) with:
- Felony Murder - 1 count
- Aggravated Child Abuse - 1 count
On Wednesday, along with deputies with the Trousdale County Sheriff’s Department, TBI agents arrested James Yates and booked him into the Trousdale County Jail. His bond was set at $40,000.
