Alleged stabbing investigated in Laurel County

Laurel County, Ky. (December 17, 2019) -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Jamie Etherton arrested Charles Ray Perkins age 35 of Fariston Road, London on Saturday night December 14, 2019 at approximately 10:40 PM.

The arrest occurred while deputies were conducting an investigation into an alleged stabbing that reportedly occurred in southern Laurel County off American Greeting Card Road.

The alleged victim Charles Ray Perkins was taken to Baptist healthcare Corbin for treatment of an injury apparently caused by a knife.

Corbin city police responded to the hospital and learned that the alleged event occurred in southern Laurel County and notified Laurel County Sheriff's office to conduct the investigation. Also the victim was reporting that someone had been shot at apartments off American greeting card Road.

While Deputy Etherton was at Corbin Hospital conducting the investigation, this individual changed his story numerous times as to how the knife injury occurred to him.

Deputies who responded to apartments off American greeting card Road could not find a shooting victim there. The alleged victim/individual at Corbin Hospital conceded that there had not been a shooting at the apartments off American Greeting Card Road.

During the investigation this individual became uncooperative and irate and began creating a disturbance at the hospital by screaming and cursing at nursing staff. Deputies and hospital security gained control of this individual who was charged by Laurel County deputies with:

  • Public intoxication – controlled substances
  • Falsely reporting an incident
  • Disorderly conduct – second-degree

In addition, the subject was charged on a Whitley District Court bench warrant of arrest charging:

  • Failure to appear in court on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place
  • Contempt of court

In addition, the subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging:

  • Failure to appear in court on charges of alcohol intoxication in a public place
  • Criminal trespassing – third-degree

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

Deputies assisting on the investigation both at the hospital and at apartments off American Greeting Card Road included Laurel Sheriff's Detective Sgt. Chris Edwards, Sgt. Greg Poynter, Deputy Hunter Disney, Deputy James Fox, and K-9 Deputy Gary Mehler.
