PSA: Clay County Cooperative Extension Service programs for October, 2018



MANCHESTER, KY - Clay County Cooperative Extension Service upcoming programs for October, 2018

There will be a BQCA (Beef Quality and Care Assurance) Training on Tuesday, October 9th at 1:00 pm at the EXCEL building.  Please call 598-2789 to register.  This program is CAIP approved for those participating in the CAIP program and are needing their educational training.

♦4-H String Art will be October 9th at 4:30 pm at the Clay County Extension Office.  Join us & create your own pumpkin string art!  FREE & open to all youth ages 9-17.  Please call 598-2789 to register by Thursday, October 4th.

Harvesting Homemakers will be on October 11th at 6:00 pm at the Clay County Extension Office.  Come learn about Clay County Homemakers and meet others.  Enjoy an evening of pumpkin food and crafts.  Call 598-2789 to let us know you’re interested in attending.  Looking forward to meeting you!  FREE!

Fall Pumpkin Painting will be held on October 12th at the Extension Office beginning at 1:00 pm.  Rebecca Miller will be teaching you how to paint a fall picture on an 8” X 10” canvas that you can display in your home.  Class is limited so you must call 598-2789 to register.  FREE and open to the public.

♦Our next 4-H Teen Club meeting will be on October 15th at 5:00 pm at the Horse Creek Baptist Church Community building.  They will be working on Operation Christmas Child shoes boxes for Samaritan’s Purse.

This club is open to middle school aged and high school aged students interested in developing leadership skills and enjoy working to better the community and 4-H!  This club is a good way to meet new people, attend leadership events, become a camp counselor and help your community!  Call Alissa at 598-2789 for more information on joining the 4-H Teen Club.  FREE!

A Year of Recipes will be on October 16th at 6:00 pm at the Clay County Extension Office.  We will be using our SNAP calendar recipes to prepare the October recipes.  Come enjoy a tasty fall food.  FREE & open to the public, but you MUST call 598-2789 to register.

♦Holiday Ideas (Homemaker Leader Training) will be October 18th at 10:00 am at the Extension Office. Love to craft? Looking for craft ideas for the holidays? Then this is the program for you. We will be talking about a series of crafts and be making one craft at the workshop that day. FREE and open to the public, but please call 598-2789 to register.

4-H Fun with Painting will be on October 18th at 4:45 pm at the EXCEL building beside McDonalds.  This event is for children and families.  Each family member will be painting their own canvas or kids can paint alone.  This is a great opportunity to explore a new hobby and enjoy family bonding time.  FREE!  Limited spots are available.  Door prizes will be given away!  Kenna Spears will be teaching the painting class for us.  Sponsored by:  Clay County Extension Office and the Clay County Family Resource Centers.  You MUST call 598-2789 to register by Monday, October 15th.

♦The next Beekeeping Workshop will be Saturday, October 20th at 9:00 am at the EXCEL building.  Beginner session at 9 am – topics include: How Bees Communicate, Role of the Drone, Queen & Worker, How do Bees Make Honey, Wild Bees! And How to Set-up a Bee Hive.  Intermediate session at 12 pm – topics include: Conduct Hive Inspections, Pulling of any Remaining Honey Supers, Varroa Mite Treatment, Hive Beetle & Wax Moth Management and Feeding of Bees.  Beginner sessions are inside in a classroom environment.  Intermediate is outside and hands-on at a bee farm conveniently located near the morning session.  Beginners will learn terms, concepts and overall beekeeping knowledge.  Beginners may want to attend the afternoon session as well, but they will need protective clothing.  Intermediate beekeepers have existing colonies, at least a year of experience and need to bring their own protective clothing and tools to the workshop.  Lunch will be provided!  FREE!  For more information and to register, so that we have enough food for everyone, please call Jeff at 598-2789 or Joel Gonia at 502-235-0727.

♦Growth Wheel will be October 22nd at 5:30 pm at the Extension Office. Have you been wanting to start a small business and wondering how to get started? Attend the first in a three part series. Growth Wheel will help you be successful. It can help you avoid blind spots and make good decisions. The program is FREE, but you must call to register at 598-2789. A lite meal may be provided.

4-H Halloween Sweet Treats & Craft Evening will be on October 23rd at 4:30 pm at the EXCEL building beside McDonalds.  Come learn about 4-H and cooking basics.  We will be preparing pumpkin peanut butter dip and decorating a pumpkin for Halloween!  This is a great opportunity for youth to have fun, learn new skills and hobbies and meet new friends!  FREE & open to all youth ages 9-18.  Please call 598-2789 to register by October 19th.

♦Cindy Rice, with the Socially Disadvantaged Groups Grant, will be at the Clay County Extension Office on October 23rd between 12:30-4:00 pm. She will assist female and minority producers/farmers in application completion and conservation programs and practices. Applications assisting with may include NRCS, FSA, RD, Small Farm Grant, association funding and possible CAIP. There will be information on opportunities such as hemp production, conferences and fields days along with handouts from the Socially Disadvantages Groups Workshops. The SDG program is focused on female and minority farmers. Call the Extension Office at 598-2789 to register or for more information.

Creole Cooking Class will be October 25th at 6:00 pm at the Extension Office. Come learn about creole cooking and sample a dish. Join other individuals that like to experience foods from different cultures. The program is FREE and open to the public, but call 598-2789 to register.
