Friday morning crash claims 3 lives in Laurel County

Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting an update on a triple fatality traffic crash which occurred on Hal Rogers Parkway, West – Ky 80 at the intersection of Ky. 1535 – Sinking Creek Road on Friday morning March 2, 2018 at approximately 7:24 AM.

Laurel Sheriff's Detective Chris Edwards along with Capt. Chuck Johnson are reconstructing the crash assisted by Laurel Sheriff John Root, Lieut. Greg Poynter, Sgt. Brett Reeves, Deputy Brandon Broughton, Deputy Brad Mink, Deputy Bryon Lawson, and Deputy Gilbert Acciardo.

Investigators report that apparently Hyundai passenger car and a Dodge ram 3500 pickup collided in the intersection after the passenger car pulled out from Sinking Creek Road in front of the path of the pickup truck. After impact, the two vehicles left the roadway and came to rest off the right hand shoulder over an embankment. Investigators are looking at the bright morning sun possibly being a contributing factor.

  • The Hyundai car was driven by Gloria Faye Engle age 72 of London with two occupants -her great grandchildren -an eight-year-old female and a 14-year-old male.   All three occupants were trapped in the vehicle and had to be extricated by London Laurel Rescue squad and Swiss Colony volunteer fire department and were all three pronounced deceased at the scene by Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling.
  • The Dodge Ram 3500 pickup was driven by Chad Brent Sturgill age 30 of London – not injured
  • Assisting at the crash site was also for the Laurel County Sheriff's office: Cpl. Jack Caudill, and CSO Danny Mitchell. Also assisting at the crash site was Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, London Laurel Rescue squad, Colony Volunteer Fire Department, and the Kentucky State Highway Department.
