Confrontation and Arrest after Deputies Respond to Complaint Scene of Man with Two Long Butcher Knives near a Residence in Barbourville, KY

BARBOURVILLE, KY - The Knox County Sheriff's Department reports that on Monday, March 25, 2024, at approximately 7:10 am, Knox County Deputies responded to a complaint of a man walking around with two long butcher knives near a residence on Hooker Branch in Barbourville.

When the deputies arrived they observed a man, identified as 42-year-old James R. Cole of Barbourville, attempting to hide behind a pallet of concrete blocks.

As the deputies approached the Cole, he came out from behind the blocks, laid the knives down and walked toward them.

He refused all commands to stop given by the deputies, continued to walk toward them, became combative, and a physical confrontation followed.

After being physically subdued, James Cole was arrested and lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.

James Cole was charged with:

  • Disorderly Conduct
  • Public Intoxication-Controlled Substance
  • Assault 3rd Degree/Police Officer
  • Resisting Arrest

After the arrest, the deputies learned that Cole had been smoking meth all night.
