Drug Trafficking arrest during joint investigation by Laurel County deputies & Williamsburg City Police

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Justin Taylor along with Deputy Landry Collett, Deputy James Fox, and shift Sgt. John Inman placed drug charges on Steven Thomas Helwig age 35 of Crystal Lake, Illinois early Tuesday morning September 1, 2020 at approximately 3:42 AM.

The charges were the result of an investigation conducted by Laurel Sheriff's deputies with assistance from Williamsburg City Police after Laurel County deputies conducted an investigation on a suspicious vehicle – a black Buick Verano found in a business parking lot off West Cumberland Gap Parkway, 10 miles south of London, with a male subject (Helwig) found in possession of:

  • Suspected Methamphetamine
  • A glass smoking pipe
  • Marijuana
  • A large amount of US currency

The investigation led Laurel County deputies to a motel room in Williamsburg where Laurel County deputies and Williamsburg City Police utilizing a search warrant found Methamphetamine and Marijuana there associated with the suspect Laurel Deputies had in custody.

Steven Thomas Helwig was charged by Laurel County deputies in Laurel County with:

  • Possession of a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Drug paraphernalia
  • Possession of Marijuana

Additionally, this subject was charged by Williamsburg City Police officers in Whitley County with:

  • Trafficking in a controlled substance – first-degree – first offense – Methamphetamine
  • Trafficking Marijuana

This individual was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.

Williamsburg City Police officers involved in the investigation included Dorman Patrick, Eddie Cain, Jason Williams, Jim Pool, Elijah Hunter.

Knox County Deputy Bobby Jones also assisted on the Helwig drug arrest.

Pictured is contraband seized and a large amount of cash seized.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root stated that he appreciates the spirit of cooperation that exists between the Laurel County Sheriff's office and Williamsburg City Police.

Laurel County Sheriff John Root stated that drug investigations will be continuing.
