Deputies conducting a welfare check locate adult passed out & two unsupervised young children

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Hobie Daugherty along with Sgt. Greg Poynter and K-9 Deputy Gary Mehler arrested Jennifer Smith age 33 of East Bernstadt on Thursday night August 27, 2020 at approximately 7:30 PM.

The arrest occurred off KY 1376 approximately 5 miles north of London after deputies were dispatched to conduct a welfare check in a residence there regarding possible poor living conditions, no food, and possible drug usage.

Upon arrival at the scene deputies noted an open door and upon entry located a female adult apparently passed out who was determined to be under the influence.

Deputies located two unsupervised children in the residence – a two-year-old and a four-year-old. Deputies further noted finding a used syringe within access of the children and little to no food in the residence.

Jennifer Smith was charged with:

  • Two counts of wanton endangerment – second-degree
  • Two counts of endangering the welfare of a minor
  • Possession of drug paraphernalia

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.
