MANCHESTER, KY - The Clay County Sheriff's Office is reporting that area residents have been getting calls from a person(s) claiming to be a lieutenant with the Clay County Sheriffs Office.
The fraudulent caller is telling people that they have active warrants for missing jury duty. The caller also states that the resident(s) can buy money (gift) cards for them at local stores to take care of the warrants.
This is a scam!
We were told, the number they are using is actually the Sheriffs Office phone number. This is called spoofing.
Caller ID spoofing is when a caller's identity is disguised by falsifying the information that appears on the caller ID display.
Do not fall for this scam.
You will never be contacted by phone from the Clay County Sheriff's Office and told to get a gift card for taking care of a warrant.
