As a resident and advocate within the 89th District, I’ve been following the conversation around Amendment 2 with great interest. On October 28, State Representative Timmy Truett appeared on What’s Up World to discuss the issues surrounding this crucial amendment on school choice. While Rep. Truett expressed concerns and offered a stance that seemed cautious, his arguments revolved around protecting the status quo in public education. However, the more I listen and analyze, the more I see inconsistencies that need to be addressed for the sake of transparency.

What’s Up World

Amendment 2 is about empowering parents with the freedom to choose the best educational options for their children. It’s about breaking away from a failing system that traps students in underperforming schools without recourse. Yet, Mr. Truett’s arguments seem rooted in maintaining the power of the Board of Education, where he has direct connections as a principal, rather than putting families first. This dual role is a clear conflict of interest, and it's time to question whether his stance genuinely serves the people or merely protects entrenched interests.

Moreover, there is a significant issue of credibility at play. During an earlier episode of What’s Up World (below) on February 22, Mr. Truett (left) dismissed the legalization of medical cannabis, advocating against it on moral and societal grounds. Yet, in the same breath, he admitted he would personally buy it if his family needed it. This stark contradiction reveals an unsettling double standard. If Mr. Truett is willing to personally benefit from something he denies others legally, what does that say about his leadership and the consistency of his values?

 What’s Up World

It’s clear to me that Mr. Truett's arguments rely heavily on fear—fear of change, fear of choice, and fear of trusting the people of this district to make decisions for themselves. This tactic signals a loss of the real argument, relying on scare tactics instead of a fair and reasoned debate. The residents of the 89th District deserve honesty, consistency, and leaders who are willing to face challenges with integrity rather than hold back necessary progress to protect their positions.

Amendment 2 is an opportunity to expand school choice, bring innovative solutions, and offer every child the chance to reach their potential. I urge voters to look beyond the rhetoric and the entrenched interests and vote for a future where every family has the right to choose what’s best for their children.
