Wanted Suspect Screamed, Yelled and Struggled with Police During Arrest in Laurel County, Kentucky

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Shift Sgt. Travis Napier arrested Dakota W. Smith age 26 of London early Friday morning October 20, 2023 at approximately 6:01 AM.

The arrest occurred off Slate Lick Road, approximately 2 miles north of London after Sgt. Napier was dispatched to a suspicious person complaint on Little Pittsburg Road north of London.

Upon arriving at the scene Sgt. Napier located the suspect and noted that he observed the subject throw something to the ground.

An investigation was conducted on the subject and it was learned that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant.

As Sgt. Napier attempted to place the subject under arrest he began to physically resist near Sgt. Napier's patrol vehicle and the struggle continued out into the middle of the roadway there.

During the struggle the subject placed his hand over Sgt. Napier's holstered Taser to avoid him gaining access to it to protect himself. The subject continued to actively resist arrest.

Sgt. Napier noted in his report that the subject screamed and yelled the whole time.

London City Police officers arrived to backup Sgt. Napier and the suspect was then taken into custody. Sgt.

Napier noted in his report that the item the individual threw to the ground was a machete.

Dakota W. Smith was charged with:

  • Disorderly conduct – second-degree
  • Resisting arrest

In addition, this subject was charged on a Laurel District Court bench warrant of arrest charging failure to appear in court for a preliminary hearing regarding a charge of:

  • Burglary – third-degree

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Correctional Center.

London City Police officers assisting on the arrest of the subject that was actively resisting being taken into custody included: Sgt. Wade Mitchell, Patrolman James Williams, and Patrolman Andrew Lawson.
