SANDY HOOK, KY – An inmate serving 29 years at the Little Sandy Correctional Complex in Elliot County that escaped by walking away from the minimum-security unit at the prison has been captured.
Randall W. Whitaker, the 62 year-old escapee was apprehended by LSCC staff just before 3:30 p.m. approximately two miles from the prison. He was taken into custody without incident and transported back to the prison.
He will be charged with:
- Escape
Kentucky State Police Post 8 in Morehead is leading the investigation.
Randall W. Whitaker was serving a 29-year sentence for:
- Burglary
- Wanton endangerment
- Flagrant non-support
- Bail jumping
- Receiving stolen property
- Escape 2nd degree
- Theft by deception
- Criminal mischief
- Burglary out of Warren County
He was also serving on:
- Possession of a controlled substance out of Simpson and Ohio counties
- Trafficking in a controlled substance out of Edmonson and Butler counties

SANDY HOOK, Ky. (July 3, 2023) – Randall W. Whitaker, an inmate at Little Sandy Correctional Complex, walked away from the minimum-security unit at the prison at 9:15 a.m. Whitaker, 62, is a 5’11” 222-pound white male with partially gray hair and blue eyes. He has a scar over his right eye.
Whitaker was serving a 29-year sentence and was eligible for parole in August 2024. His charges include burglary, wanton endangerment, flagrant non-support, bail jumping, receiving stolen property, escape 2nd degree, theft by deception, and criminal mischief, and burglary out of Warren County. He was also serving on possession of a controlled substance out of Simpson and Ohio counties and trafficking in a controlled substance out of Edmonson and Butler counties.
