REPORT: Man rents U-Haul Truck for the Purpose of stealing the Catalytic Converter

WILLIAM ALLEN 600

BARBOURVILLE, KY - The Knox County Sheriff's Department is reporting that on Friday, July 30, 2021, at approximately 7:30 PM Knox County Deputies received a complaint of a man in the process of cutting the catalytic converter off a U-Haul truck at a residence on Highway 2417 in Corbin.

When the deputies arrived at the location, they observed the U-Haul and a man underneath it.

After conducting an investigation, the deputies learned that the man identified as 39-year-old William Allen of Barbourville had rented the U-Haul four (4) hours earlier from Corbin Storage U-Haul for the purpose of stealing the catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter had been removed and was later recovered from the trunk of a vehicle near the U-Haul.
Deputies also observed the reciprocating saw used to cut the converter from the exhaust system on the ground underneath the U-Haul.

A straight piece of flexible exhaust pipe had also been purchased to reconnect the pipe on the truck so the missing converter would go undetected when the truck was returned.

Deputy Scotty Wilson charged William Allen with:

  • Theft by Unlawful Taking or Disposition-over $500
  • Criminal Mischief-1st Degree
  • Possession of Burglary Tools

This individual was lodged in the Knox County Detention Center.
