Double Fatal 2 Vehicle Traffic Crash on U.S. 25E in Laurel County, Kentucky

LONDON, KY - Laurel County Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Office Reconstructionist Deputy Brad Mink assisted by Reconstructionists Major Chuck Johnson, Lieut. Chris Edwards, and Detective Richard Dalrymple are investigating a two vehicle double fatal traffic crash which occurred Wednesday afternoon April 29, 2020 at approximately 2:02 PM on the West Cumberland Gap Parkway about 10 miles South of London. 

Apparently, a Kia passenger car pulled out from a business plaza parking lot in front of the path of a west bound Ford passenger car causing the two vehicles to collide. Both vehicles had only one occupant – the drivers in each.

Both drivers received serious injuries and one was transported to St Joseph Hospital, London and the other to Corbin Health Care Hospital for treatment of their injuries. Both drivers were pronounced deceased a short time later.

The drivers are identified as:

  • The Kia: Joie Lee, age 82 of Siler, KY -Pronounced deceased at St. Joseph Hospital London. Laurel County Coroner Doug Bowling investigating.
  • The Ford: Georgia Butler age 78 of Trosper, KY -Pronounced deceased at Baptist Health Corbin by Whitley County Coroner Andy Croley.

Assisting at the scene of the crash for the Laurel County Sheriff's office was: Capt. Robbie Grimes, Sgt. Greg Poynter, Sgt. Brett Reeves, K-9 Deputy Jake Miller, Deputy Daniel Reed, Deputy Jamie Etherton, Detective James Sizemore, Detective Bryon Lawson, and Detective Kyle Gray.

Other agencies assisting included: Ambulance Inc. of Laurel County, London Laurel Rescue Squad, West Knox Volunteer Fire Department Laurel County Coroner’s Office, and Whitley County Coroner’s Office.
