As Senate President, Stivers was essential in ensuring bills important to cities were called for a vote during the 2018 session. He supported overriding the governor’s veto of House Bill 362, which provided the phase-in of County Employees Retirement System (CERS) employer contribution rates. Additionally, he helped ensure the passage of House Bill 2 to modernize the state’s workers’ compensation system.
“It is crucial to the success of legislation that improves cities to have an ally like President Stivers,” said Chaney. “He is a true advocate for local governments. President Stivers understood how important House Bill 362 was and spoke out in support of the veto override. He also assisted in the passage of a key piece of legislation, House Bill 2, by creating a working group that brought about final passage of the bill. We are thankful for his support and look forward to a continued partnership.”
Senator Stivers thanked KLC for the recognition. “I appreciate the League’s support and acknowledgment. Cities are a vital part of Kentucky, and their growth and prosperity benefit the entire state. I am honored to represent all the cities in my district and throughout Kentucky, and I will continue to champion legislation that helps our cities succeed.”
KLC Executive Director/CEO Jonathan Steiner spoke about the key role President Stivers has played in the passage of legislation that supports cities. “His ongoing leadership and support in the Senate have been a major reason we have seen key pieces of legislation become law. KLC is honored to call President Stivers a friend of Kentucky cities.”
Founded in 1927, the Kentucky League of Cities is a membership association of more than 370 cities across the commonwealth. KLC presents the “Friend of Kentucky Cities” award to legislators who perform outstanding work advocating for issues that impact cities across the state.
