UPDATE: Amvets parking lot Shooting Investigation - Laurel County


Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Detective Gary Mehler is investigating a shooting which occurred at approximately 12:20 AM November 10, 2018 in the AMVETS parking lot approximately 9 miles South of London off US 25.

Apparently an argument occurred as a result of an ongoing dispute between two individuals when a scuffle took place and one round was fired from a derringer striking the victim.

Afterwards, the victim walked into Baptist Healthcare Hospital Corbin for treatment and was transported by ground to UK Med Center in Lexington where he is in ICU. The victim is identified as Donnie Mabe age 69. Investigators have recovered a weapon.

The other individual involved is identified as William Helton of Corbin –This individual notified 911 dispatch that he thought he shot someone in the parking lot at AMVETS following an argument/scuffle.

An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances of the shooting.

Assisting for the Laurel County Sheriff's office was Sgt. John Inman and Deputy Shannon Jones.

Corbin City Police officer Wade Mitchell also assisted.
