Burglary / Theft arrest - Laurel County

Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Sgt. Brett Reeves arrested Michael C. Smith age 39 of Burkshire Street Corbin on Wednesday morning November 7, 2018 at approximately 9:54 AM.

The arrest occurred after deputies were dispatched to a complaint that a male subject had been observed going into Interstate Auction and removing items from the store and placing them into that business'es moving van located there and left the scene in the van he stole.

Employees there called 911 and then followed the vehicle to a location at a residence off North Florence St. where the suspect was observed unloading items he took from the store and leaving them on the front porch of the residence there.

Corbin City Police officers that were nearby detained the suspect until responding deputies arrived where, following an investigation, the suspect was arrested.

Deputies learned that the suspect was unknown to the owners of the business and had no permission to take the truck or any items belonging to the store.

Michael C. Smith was charged with theft by unlawful taking – auto– $500 or more but under $10,000; burglary – third-degree.

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
