Laurel deputies dispatched to a complaint locate subject with gun

Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Josh Morgan along with Deputy Josh Scott arrested Matthew W. Sherman age 21 of Circle St., London early Monday morning October 29, 2018 at approximately 2:40 AM.

The arrest occurred on Fariston Road, approximately 3 miles South of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint of a suspicious male subject walking along the roadway there.

When deputies arrived at the scene they located the suspect observing that he had a gun in his hand and when commanded to drop the weapon, the individual became belligerent, shouting and creating a disturbance there. Finally, the individual complied dropping the gun and complying with officer’s commands.  An investigation was conducted where the individual was determined to be under the influence.

While being placed in the police car this individual pulled away from deputies but was placed in the police car where he attempted to kick the windows and hit his head against the protective screen. This individual told deputies that he was just defending his family.

This individual was charged with public intoxication – controlled substances; menacing; disorderly conduct – second-degree; resisting arrest.

A Taurus 9MM pistol was recovered.

After the arrest, deputies learned that this subject’s parent's home had apparently been shot up on nearby Circle Street. Laurel Sheriff’s Detective Gary Mehler conducted an investigation there determining that apparently an argument had occurred between Matthew Sherman (at his father’s residence on Circle Street) and an acquaintance causing the acquaintance to leave the residence.

Afterwards, an argument allegedly occurred between Matthew Sherman and his father outside the residence where Matthew Sherman fired shots into the residence and in the area of where his younger brother

(8 years old) was sleeping and also fired shots into the area where his father and mother were located. 9MM shell casings were recovered at the scene.

Matthew Sherman admitted to Detective Mehler that he shot into the residence several times stating that he was trying to protect his family (who he knew to be in the residence).

Matthew W. Sherman was charged with three counts of wanton endangerment – first-degree.

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
