KSP: NEW UPDATE ---- Shooting in Knox County

Barbourville, Ky.  - On September 19, 2018 at 4:52 p.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call from the Knox County Sheriff’s Dept. requesting assistance on Ky. 3440 (Higgins Hollow Rd.) reference to a shooting complaint. Troopers from Post 10 responded and began an investigation.

At this time, KSP can confirm two male individuals have been shot. Knox County Deputy Coroner has pronounced one person deceased here at the scene. KSP, Barbourville Police Dept. and Knox County Sheriff Dept. had a brief barricade situation until the individual came out of his residence. One person has been detained and taken to the hospital for injuries he has sustained during this incident.

Ky. 3440 (Higgins Hollow Road) will be shut down for several hours.

KSP will update as more information comes available.

UPDATE

Kentucky State Police can confirm, Glenn Edwards (57) of Gray was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Knox County Deputy Coroner after suffering a gunshot wound. The body will be sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy.

Glenn Powell (71) of Barbourville was transported from the scene and later flown to University of Tennessee Medical Center after suffering a gunshot wound. Mr. Powell is the individual who barricaded himself inside his residence and then later surrendered. Mr. Powell is listed in critical condition at this time.

Charges are pending at this time.

Ky. 3440 is now reopened.

KSP Det. Jake Wilson is continuing the investigation. Also assisted at the scene were Barbourville Police Dept. Knox County Sheriff Dept. Knox County Coroner’s Office, Barbourville Fire Department and Knox County Ambulance Service.

UPDATE

As of 7:30 a.m. on September 20, 2018 Mr. Glenn Powell has been upgraded and now listed in stable condition.

KSP is continuing to investigate how Mr. Powell received a gunshot wound.

No officers were involved in the shooting.

KSP will release more information as it comes available.

Det. Jake Wilson is continuing the investigation.

UPDATE

On September 20, 2018 the autopsy on Mr. Glen Edwards revealed he was shot in the back and died from a gunshot wound.

At this time charges on Mr. Glenn Powell are pending. Mr. Powell remains in the University of Tennessee Medical Center for injuries he suffered and is listed in stable condition.

Preliminary investigation indicates on September 19, 2018 Glen Edwards was operating a pickup truck and became stuck in the driveway belonging to Glen Powell. Mr. Edwards left his vehicle and walked a short distance to locate someone to assist him getting his vehicle out.

When Mr. Edwards and another individual returned, Powell advised them to leave and went into his residence to retrieve a weapon. Mr. Edwards remained at the scene and the other individual fled in his vehicle back to his residence.

Mr. Powell fired his weapon and stuck Mr. Edwards in the back. A short time later, the individual returned to assist Mr. Edwards at which time Mr. Powell fired at him as well. That individual return fire toward Mr. Powell striking him in the abdomen.

At this time no charges are filed on the individual that returned fire back at Mr. Powell. The name of this individual will not be released at this time.

Case is still under investigation by Det. Jake Wilson.
