KSP - Barricade Incident in Breathitt County Leaves One Dead

Jackson, Ky. (September 17, 2018) – A barricade situation in Breathitt County Sunday evening left one man dead and a Kentucky State Police Trooper injured. Trooper Josh Collett and Jackson Police Department Officer Daniel Turner responded to a residence on Highway 3193 in the Wolverine community to conduct a welfare check on a woman after family members voiced concerns about her wellbeing.

Upon arriving at the residence, officers contacted a male and advised him of the reason for their presence. Officers advised that as they spoke with the man, he went inside the residence and shut the door. Moments later a firearm was discharged from inside the residence through the front door, in the direction of the officers.

Tpr. Collett and Officer Turner retreated to safe cover, while additional Troopers and law enforcement officers responded to the scene. Over the course of the stand-off, multiple shots were fired from the residence toward police personnel. Sergeant Gary “Scotty” Sandlin was injured when he was struck in the face by a gun shot that was fired from inside the home. He was transported to Kentucky River Medical Center in Jackson for initial treatment of non-life threatening injuries. Sgt. Sandlin was later transferred to University of Kentucky Medical Center where he received additional medical treatment before being released.

KSP’s Special Response Team was activated and responded to the scene. SRT members were able to safely remove the female from the residence. She was unharmed. A man was located inside the residence with a fatal gunshot wound. He was identified as 39 year old Dwayne Robertson of Jackson.

Robertson was pronounced deceased at the scene by Breathitt County Coroner George Griffith.

Robertson’s body was sent to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Frankfort for an autopsy. Sgt. Randy Combs with KSP’s Critical Incident Response Team is heading this ongoing investigation. Updates to this investigation will be made when information is available.
