KSP - Fatal Crash I-75 in Whitley County


Williamsburg, Ky. (July 23 2018) – On Monday July 23rd 2018 around 1:00 P.M. officer Chris McQueen with Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement responded to a two vehicle fatal crash located on I-75 southbound near the 19 mile marker in Williamsburg, Kentucky.

Upon arrival and through investigation officers found 66 year old John Romine of Carmel, Indiana operating a 2007 BMW motorcycle traveling south on I-75 when he collided into the rear of a 2018 Volvo tractor trailer being operated by 56 year old Marty T. Byrnes of Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

Romine was pronounced dead on the scene by Whitley Co. Corner from injuries sustained in the crash. Byrnes, the operator of the tractor trailer was not injured in the crash. Romine was wearing a helmet at the time of the incident.

Traffic was routed down US25 at exit 15 southbound for nearly two hours while crews worked to clear debris from the roadway and while officers investigated the crash.

Assisting on Scene: CVE Sgt. Mike Taylor, CVE Officer Stevie Douglas, Whitley Co. Sheriff’s Department, Whitley Co. EMS, Whitley Co. Emergency Management, KY State Emergency Management, Gold Bug Fire Department, and Oak Grove Fire Department.
