Complaint in Laurel County lands man behind bars on various charges

Laurel County, KY -  Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Capt. Kevin Berry along with Maj. Chuck Johnson, Lieut. Greg Poynter, Detective Sgt. Chris Edwards and Sgt. Brett Reeves arrested Brian R. Smith age 42 of Court Rd., London on Tuesday afternoon June 19, 2018 at approximately 12:27 PM.

The arrest occurred off Court Road approximately 5 miles south of London after deputies were dispatched to a complaint that a male subject wearing a polo shirt and white shorts was outside a residence shooting a rifle recklessly.

When deputies arrived at the scene they observed the suspect yelling and creating a disturbance outside a residence there.

Deputies noted that the suspect was armed with a pistol in his hand as they approached him.

Deputies gave several verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon and deputies noted that the suspect had to be physically detained.

An investigation was conducted in the neighborhood where several witnesses were located that had hid due to this suspect shooting in their direction and shooting at three horses in a field nearby.

It was determined that the suspect is a convicted felon.

Brian R. Smith was charged with nine counts of wanton endangerment – first-degree; possession of handgun by convicted felon; persistent felony offender I; resisting arrest: disorderly conduct – second degree; alcohol intoxication in a public place; menacing; three counts of cruelty to animals – second degree.

This individual was lodged in the Laurel County Detention Center.
