Pursuit: Fleeing Police arrest of suspect in stolen vehicle / Laurel-Pulaski

Laurel County, KY - Sheriff John Root is reporting that: Laurel Sheriff's Deputy Bryon Lawson along with Capt. Kevin Berry with assistance from Kentucky State Police troopers arrested Jason M. Lay age 45 of Garrad St., Covington, KY on Wednesday morning June 6, 2018 at approximately 10:08 AM.

The arrest occurred on KY 80 approximately 15 miles west of London after Laurel Deputy Bryon Lawson clocked a black colored Ford Explorer traveling 80 mph in a 55 mph zone. Deputy Lawson activated his emergency equipment attempting to conduct a traffic stop, however the suspect vehicle accelerated to speeds over 100 mph traveling west bound toward Somerset.

Deputy Lawson ran a license plate check on the vehicle and learned that the vehicle was reported stolen from Covington Kentucky. The vehicle continued driving in a reckless manner traveling approximately 7 miles into Pulaski County to a location where Kentucky State police troopers were positioned to deploy spike strips in an attempt to stop the pursuit safely.

At that location, the suspect vehicle swerved toward the troopers placing them in danger causing Laurel County Deputy Lawson to use his police cruiser to intervene striking the suspect vehicle in the side causing the pursuit to conclude as safely as possible. Deputy Lawson received minor injuries. His cruiser also was damaged. There were no injuries to troopers or the public or the suspect.

Jason M. lay was charged with wanton endangerment – first-degree – police officer is victim; wanton endangerment – second degree – police officer is victim; 75 counts of wanton endangerment – first-degree regarding the numerous vehicles the suspect passed in a reckless manner during the pursuit.

He was also charged with Receiving stolen property under $10,000; speeding 25 MPH over the limit; reckless driving; improper passing; resisting arrest; and numerous other traffic violations. This individual was lodged in the Laurel County detention Center.
