UPDATE- Parents arrested - Accidental shooting in Bell County

Blackmont, Ky. - On February 21, 2018 at approximately 8:31 p.m. Kentucky State Police, Post 10 Harlan received a call from the Bell County Dispatch about an accidental shooting that occurred at a residence on Charles Collett Road in the Blackmont community of Bell County. Troopers responded and began an investigation.

Preliminary investigation indicates that an 11 year old boy accidentally shot his six year old sister in the head with a handgun.

The six year old was transported to Middlesboro ARH and then flown to University of Tennessee for her injuries. She was alert and responsive at the time of transport to UT. At this time, the girl is reported to be in critical but stable condition.

At the time of the shooting, the children were left unattended with no adult supervision inside the home with several loaded firearms that were not properly secured.

Charges in this case are still pending.

KSP Detective Aaron Frederick is continuing the investigation.

UPDATE

On March 1, 2018 KSP Detective Aaron Fredrick arrested and charged the parents involved in this investigation. Jennifer Collett, 29, of Hulen and James Collett, 30, of Hulen were both charged with three counts of wanton endangerment 1st degree and three counts of endangering the welfare of a minor. Due to three small kids inside of the residence at the time.

Mr. and Mrs. Collett were lodged into the Bell County Detention Center.

The six year old girl was released from the hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. She has been placed with another family member at this time.
