Joint Statement from Reps. York, Couch, Fugate, Hale, Bentley, Brown, Blanton, Wells, and Herald to Commend Kentucky PSC Power Rate Relief for Eastern Kentuckians

FRANKFORT, Ky. (January 18, 2018) – Just yesterday, this same group of 9 representatives from Eastern Kentucky counties sent a letter that called for the Kentucky PSC to expedite President Trump’s Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act to result in lower rates for Eastern Kentucky power customers. As a result of that effort, combined with a commitment from the Kentucky PSC to find solutions, power customers in Eastern Kentucky will see an immediate 4 percent reduction likely on their next bill, as opposed to what was expected to be a 9 percent increase in power rates.

“Today’s announcement by the Kentucky PSC will provide immediate, great relief for Appalachian Kentucky power customers, and it simply could not come at a better time as a historic cold spell has set down on Eastern Kentucky. No longer will all residents, including those on fixed incomes, have to make the hard choice between paying their heat bill or paying for food, clothing, or doctor visits for themselves and their families. Not only will this announcement lower residential customer rates, but it will also subsidize the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

“Congratulations and thank you to the Kentucky PSC for listening to legislators and residents from Eastern Kentucky, and for being willing to develop innovative solutions to make this critical rate reduction a reality.”
