Around 10 A.M. October 27, 2016, the sheriff’s department received information that a man attempted to pass what appeared to be a counterfeit $100 bill at Hometown Bank in Corbin.
Sergeant Todd Shelley and Deputy Cody Harrell attempted to locate the man for investigation. Roy Lee Wells, 54, of Corbin was located at Bell’s Country Store and was found to be in possession of two $100 bills bearing the same serial number.
Further investigation indicated that Wells attempted to pass one of the counterfeit bills at Circle K in Corbin. Wells was arrested and is charged with two counts of first-degree possession of a forged instrument. He was lodged in the Whitley County Detention Center.
The sheriff’s department is continuing the local investigation into counterfeit $100 bills. In this case, the counterfeit bills did include the purple vertical ribbon. Also, detection pens indicated that the bills were not authentic.
In a recent case, the counterfeit bills did not include the vertical ribbon and were not detected by indicator pens.
