HYDEN, KY — Tayton Lewis, a fourth-grader at Stinnett Elementary School , won a contest to design the T-shirts that will be given to thousands of volunteers during PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month in April.

Tayton is the son of Scott and Angel Lewis of Essie , Ky. He is an Honor Roll student and a member of the PRIDE Club and A Club. He also plays guitar.

Tayton’s T-shirt design featured the slogan, “Put PRIDE in Your Hands.” His idea was selected from 2,379 contest entries submitted by students across 38 counties of southern and eastern Kentucky .

On Feb. 1, Congressman Hal Rogers (KY-5), who founded PRIDE, congratulated Tayton and presented him with the first Spring Cleanup T-shirt during a school assembly. Tayton also received the PRIDE Volunteer of the Month Award for his contribution to the Spring Cleanup.

“Tayton, I congratulate you for winning such a competitive contest, and I thank you for developing a slogan that truly captures the spirit of the annual Spring Cleanup,” Rogers said.

“‘Put PRIDE in Your Hands’ reminds us that our region will be as clean as we want it to be,” Rogers said. “You can make this the most successful Spring Cleanup ever in your community, and the PRIDE organization will support you every step of the way. A clean, healthy environment is in our hands."

“‘Get Five for PRIDE’ is also on the T-shirts because we’re asking everyone to bring at least five friends to volunteer with you during PRIDE Spring Cleanup,” Rogers added. “By working together, you can have fun and more quickly make a big difference in your community. We also are encouraging every city and county to increase their volunteer numbers by 5 percent over last year.”

During PRIDE Spring Cleanup Month in April, communities will recruit volunteers to pick up litter. PRIDE will provide free T-shirts, trash bags and gloves for the volunteers, as well as funding for local governments to dispose of litter, remove dumps and offer free trash drop-off events.

In 2010, there were 31,200 Spring Cleanup volunteers across the region, which was the largest turnout since the annual event began in 1998.

Preparations for Spring Cleanup Month already are underway at the regional and local level.

To volunteer for the Spring Cleanup, call the PRIDE office, toll-free number, at 888-577-4339. The PRIDE web site is www.kypride.org.
